Inspiring Eco-Friendly Holi Colour Workshop at Garogaon ME School
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, with support from ASTEC and the Goreswar branch of the Assam Science Society, held a workshop on preparing environment-friendly Holi colours at Garogaon ME School in Goreswar on Thursday. The event aimed to promote safe, natural alternatives to commercially available chemical colours ahead of the festival.
The workshop was conducted by retired teacher Ashar Chandra Kalita and inaugurated by Dimbeshwar Rajbanshi, president of the Assam Science Society’s Goreswar branch. Rajej Duttabarua, secretary of the Nalbari District Eco Club and an environmental activist, outlined the harmful effects of chemically prepared Holi paints commonly sold in the market.
As the resource person, Duttabarua demonstrated how to make natural Holi colours using simple, locally available ingredients. He mixed maize and rice flour with lemon juice and showed how plant-based additions-garlic, ginger, Narji flowers, daffodils, carrots, lettuce seeds, eggplant and beans-can produce a range of colours without toxic chemicals.
Guest speaker and journalist Abdul Latif Chowdhury urged residents to adopt these natural preparations instead of chemical colours to protect health and the environment. The workshop was attended by social worker Arun Majhi, Nava Nath, and teachers Anima Deka, Sabita Boro, Pranjal Deka and Makunda Kakati, among others.
