Transforming Vizag’s Roads: Unleashing AI-Powered Traffic Management for a Safer, Smoother Tomorrow!

Vizag is set to join the ranks of smart cities by transitioning from traditional traffic signal timers to an innovative AI-based traffic management system under the SARTHI project (Systematic Augmented Radial Traffic and Hoop Induction). The initiative, budgeted at ₹60-65 crore, aims for completion by April 2026 and will involve the installation of over 2,000 advanced surveillance cameras across 56 key corridors and 102 junctions, including notable locations like RK Beach Road.

In a conversation with The Hindu on February 24, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg highlighted the project’s ambitious goals. To ensure its success, a GVMC team will visit cities such as Trivandrum, Kochi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad starting February 25, focusing on best practices to be integrated into SARTHI. “The objective of SARTHI is to minimize waiting times at traffic signals while enhancing road safety for all users,” Mr. Garg stated.

SARTHI consists of two core systems designed to optimize traffic flow. The first is the Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), which will be deployed at 102 junctions. This advanced system will replace static timers with sensors that detect real-time traffic density. For instance, if one lane is congested while the opposite lane is clear, the system will automatically extend the green light to alleviate traffic bottlenecks.

The second component, the AI-powered Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), will oversee traffic at more than 90 junctions. It aims to streamline vehicle identification through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), ensuring that motorists who run red lights are detected and issued automatic e-challans via the Red Light Violation Detection (RLVD) feature.

Mr. Garg emphasized that through the implementation of project SARTHI, Visakhapatnam is embracing a future where AI alleviates rush-hour congestion and improves travel efficiency while holding violators accountable in real time. He described the initiative as the “gold standard” for smart city frameworks globally.

Many metropolitan areas across India have already initiated similar technologies to tackle traffic congestion. Bengaluru has implemented ATCS, while Chennai has recently adopted an Adaptive Signal System supported by Japanese Technology (JICA). According to another GVMC official en route to Trivandrum, “One of the most advanced models in India integrates facial recognition technology with traffic flow sensors.”

As this transformative project unfolds, Vizag is poised to redefine urban mobility, enhancing the daily commutes of its residents and setting a benchmark for other cities aiming to leverage technology for smarter infrastructure solutions.

By integrating AI into its traffic management approach, Vizag is taking significant strides towards a more efficient and safer urban environment, aimed at improving life for its residents while contributing to the broader vision of sustainable smart cities across India.
