Empowering Women: Malayalam Cinema’s #MeToo Moment Sparks Workplace Revolution
The Malayalam film industry faces a significant upheaval as the Hema Committee report and recent sexual abuse allegations expose systemic harassment. Women artists view this as a critical “uprising” and a necessary “wake-up call for every workplace.” Actor-politician Khushboo Sundar emphasized the importance of timely reporting of such incidents, warning against delayed revelations. Actor Maala Parvathi asserted that employing women isn’t a “favor” but recognition of their talent and effort.
Following a 2017 assault case involving actor Dileep, the Kerala government set up the Justice K Hema Committee, which uncovered extensive harassment and alleged that a “criminal gang” dominates the industry. Ten industry veterans, including prominent actors and directors, have been accused of sexual assault.
In response, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) president Mohanlal and the entire executive committee resigned, accepting “moral responsibility.” Bengali actor Sreelekha Mitra and Malayalam actor Minu Muneer have publicly accused industry figures of sexual misconduct, leading to the resignation of implicated personalities like director Ranjith and AMMA’s general secretary Siddique.
As more actors come forward with #MeToo revelations, senior actors like Revathy and Parvathi call for industry-wide changes. Revathy stressed that earlier publication of the Hema report could have protected many women. Parvathi highlighted the need for a fair recognition of women’s talent in the industry, advocating an end to the culture of needing a “godfather.”
Amidst strong support from the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) underway, these revelations are expected to reshape the Malayalam film industry, setting a precedent for other film industries.
