Uproar in Assam: 18 Opposition Parties Unite to File Police Complaint Against CM Himanta for ‘Promoting Enmity’
Opposition Parties of Assam File Police Complaint Against CM Sarma for ‘Promoting Enmity’
Several opposition parties in Assam, led by the United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), lodged a police complaint against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday. The complaint, filed at Dispur police station by UOFA general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi and leaders from 18 aligned parties, accuses Sarma of inciting communal tension and promoting enmity based on religion and race.
Gogoi and his allies allege that Sarma’s statements, especially in light of the gang-rape of a 14-year-old girl in Dhing, are targeted at a specific community and have led to attacks on minorities by BJP workers in Sivasagar. They claim these actions and statements are part of a larger conspiracy to create unrest in the state.
The complaint notes Sarma’s history of provocative remarks, referencing a previous incident where he reportedly called for the eviction of Bengali-speaking Muslims, referred to pejoratively as ‘Miya’. It also highlights recent instances where he allegedly targeted a journalist with communal undertones and accused a specific community of land encroachment.
The UOFA further points to Sarma’s self-characterization as a "mad dog" during a recent party meeting as an indicator of his potential to incite violence for political gain. The opposition called for immediate legal action under specific sections of the Bharatia Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and emphasized the urgency of restraining Sarma to prevent potential riots.
Additionally, UOFA leaders have requested the President and Governor to remove Sarma from office due to his "communal and unconstitutional" behavior. They also plan to approach the Supreme Court for an investigation into the Chief Minister and his family’s alleged unaccounted properties.
The police have acknowledged the complaint but have yet to register a case. The situation remains tense as the opposition continues to push for accountability and preventive measures.
