Frustrated Residents of Assam’s Margherita to File FIR Against Contractors Over Disastrous Jal Jeevan Mission Project
Residents of the Balukhad area in Margherita are gearing up to lodge a formal complaint against contractors involved in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) project. Initiated three years ago, the project aimed to provide water taps to homes under Ward No. 6 of Margherita Municipal Board in Tinsukia. Despite the installation of these taps, not a single drop of water has reached residents since the project’s supposed completion.
The JJM site is now in disrepair, overtaken by large bushes and vandalized fencing. The contractors responsible have yet to inspect or rectify these issues, heightening local community concerns.
Arun Baruah, a Balukhad resident, voiced his frustrations, recalling that the project’s foundation stone was laid by Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma in 2021. Despite the installation of pipes and taps, the water supply remains non-functional. “It’s disheartening that a multi-crore project like this has failed to provide us with basic water supply,” Baruah stated. “We are left with no choice but to purchase water for our daily needs.”
Baruah warned that should the contractors fail to address the issues, Balukhad residents would file an FIR at the Margherita police station. They also plan to submit formal complaints to the Margherita Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), the Tinsukia District Commissioner, and the Sub-Divisional Officer of the Public Health Engineering Department in Digboi Division.
IndiaToday NE’s attempts to contact the involved contractors and officials for comments were unsuccessful, as none could be reached.
The residents’ frustration and disappointment reflect the broader discontent with the JJM project’s management and execution, highlighting the dire need for accountability and action in delivering essential services.
