Shock in Manipur: BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte Dies Amid Violence
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Vungzagin Valte died on February 21, 2026, at 12:19 PM after a long battle with critical injuries sustained during the ethnic violence in Manipur in May 2023. He was undergoing treatment at Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurugram at the time of his death.
Valte had been airlifted to Medanta on February 8, 2026, after his health deteriorated earlier in the month. Officials and sources said the new Manipur chief minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, personally monitored his condition and arranged the air ambulance, seeing him off at the airport as a gesture of solidarity.
The Kuki-Zo legislator, who represented the Thanlon Assembly constituency in Churachandpur district, was brutally attacked on May 4, 2023 — the second day of clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities. On that day he had met then chief minister N. Biren Singh in Imphal to appeal for peace; while returning, his vehicle was stopped by a mob near RIMS Road at Nagamapal in Imphal West district, and he was pulled out and assaulted. The attack left one side of his face crushed and his left eye severely damaged.
Following the assault, Valte underwent prolonged treatment in Delhi and Churachandpur and was airlifted to New Delhi for advanced medical care. He remained largely bedridden and treated at multiple hospitals in the national capital for nearly two years before returning to Churachandpur in April 2025 to continue his recovery.
Valte was a senior BJP leader from the hill districts and a prominent voice for the Kuki-Zo community. His assault during the 2023 violence drew widespread attention and remained a symbol of the conflict’s human toll.
He is survived by his family. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are awaited.
