Furious AIUDF MLA Condemns Assam CM’s ‘Miya’ Remarks, Urges Unwavering Unity!
All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Rafiqul Islam has sharply criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent remarks on the “Miya” community in the state assembly. Islam accused Sarma of divisive politics and neglecting his duty to represent all citizens of Assam equally.
During the assembly session, Islam emphasized, “It is the Chief Minister’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the 3.4 crore people of Assam. Unfortunately, his reply showed bias towards one community over another. Such division tactics are unacceptable.”
Islam also condemned Sarma’s suggestion that residents from certain parts of Assam should refrain from traveling to others, arguing that free movement within the state is crucial.
The controversy arose during a discussion on law and order, following an adjournment motion by opposition parties like the Congress and AIUDF. Recent incidents, including the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon district, were highlighted.
Sarma’s comments, particularly his statement, “I won’t let Assam become a land of Miyas,” sparked immediate backlash. Defending his stance, Sarma said, “My request to the Miya-Muslim community is not to forcefully try to settle in indigenous Assamese areas against their will; this will aggravate societal fault lines and be a possible security issue.”
He further stated, “I am not against Islam, but if Hindus’ land is being snatched away and girls are being tortured, I will not remain silent. I am aware that my life may be at risk for this.”
Islam and other opposition leaders continue to challenge Sarma’s statements, decrying them as harmful to Assam’s social fabric. This debate underscores the ongoing tensions and complex dynamics within the state’s diverse communities.
