Ronnie Lyngdoh Resigns As Leader of Opposition
SHILLONG, Aug 27: Congress leader Ronnie V Lyngdoh has resigned from his position as Leader of Opposition, confirmed by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Tuesday. With Lyngdoh’s resignation, the TMC is poised to claim the Leader of Opposition position. Mukul Sangma and state TMC chief Charles Pyngrope are leading contenders. Pyngrope emphasized adherence to procedural rules, stating, “Writing to the Speaker is just putting your mind into paper but we are governed by a set of rules.” VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit mentioned potential collaboration with either the TMC or Congress to fortify their claim, contingent on securing adequate support.
State Government Plans 3.5-Acre Green Space in Shillong
In a significant urban development initiative, the Meghalaya state government announced plans to create a 3.5-acre public green space in central Shillong. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong disclosed this during an Assembly session on Tuesday, revealing the project will be located at the current PWD complex in Barik. The relocation of the PWD office has already commenced. The envisioned green space aims to celebrate the state’s cultural heritage, enhance tourist experience, and serve as a communal gathering spot for residents. The multifunctional area will accommodate events, a children’s park, parking facilities, taxi drop-off points, and a designated national flag hoisting section.
Rising Temperatures Draw Attention in Assembly
Addressing climate change concerns, VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit raised alarms in the Assembly over the region’s unusual temperature rise, particularly in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills. He criticized the state government for neglecting climate change’s environmental impact. A study from IIT Gandhinagar’s Water & Climate Lab indicated a significant rise in Meghalaya’s annual average temperature from 1981 to 2012, with further increases predicted by 2040, likely intensifying extreme weather events. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong acknowledged the urgency and outlined government measures to counteract climate change effects in Meghalaya.
These updates highlight key political shifts, developmental projects, and environmental concerns currently shaping Meghalaya’s socio-political landscape.
