Former Congress state president Bhupen Bora will formally join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 22, 2026, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday evening at Bora’s residence in Ghoramara, Guwahati. The announcement came after a prolonged meeting between the two leaders and was made to reporters at the house.
Dr. Sarma said Bora will be inducted into the party in the presence of state BJP president Dilip Saikia. He described Bora as a grassroots leader whose joining would strengthen the BJP, adding that Bora had long struggled within the Congress and would now find an appropriate platform in the BJP to pursue his work. In the Chief Minister’s words, the move would “make clear that Congress is no longer a suitable place for Hindus.”
Family members received Bora ceremonially: his wife and son performed a traditional aarti and gave him a warm welcome when the Chief Minister visited his home. The developments follow Bora’s resignation from the Congress on Monday; the party’s central leadership had not accepted the resignation immediately and had urged him to reconsider, for which Bora sought some time.
Dr. Sarma had earlier said the BJP’s doors were always open to Bora and assured him of full government support to contest the upcoming assembly election from a safe constituency. Political observers say Bora’s switch to the BJP could significantly alter the electoral arithmetic in Assam ahead of the state polls.
