MDC Umashankar Protests at Sepahijala DM Office: Urgent Public Outcry
Agartala, 16 February 2026 — Umashankar Debbarma, MDC (Member of District Council) of the 19th Amtali-Go Laghati constituency under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), staged a sit-in protest at the entrance of the Sepahijala District Magistrate’s office on Monday, joined by party workers and supporters, to demand the cancellation of plans to establish the headquarters of the 49th Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Bishramganj Nagar Panchayat and the adjoining areas of Barojala and Chikonchhara.
Debbarma said the protest was mounted in opposition to the proposed BSF headquarters and that he would maintain the sit-in until the authorities withdraw the plan. The demonstration focused attention on local concerns over the siting of the paramilitary unit and drew a steady group of local activists to the district magistrate’s office grounds.
Senior district officials, including Sepahijala’s Additional Superintendent of Police Rajib Sutradhar and Bishramganj Police Station OC Ajit Debbarma, attended the scene and tried to persuade the MDC to move the protest away from the office entrance. Authorities cited legal restrictions that prohibit demonstrations within 100 metres of the District Magistrate’s premises as grounds for requesting relocation.
The protest remains ongoing at the entrance to the district magistrate’s office as of 16 February 2026, with Debbarma and his supporters seeking a formal cancellation of the BSF headquarters proposal and signaling they will continue their peaceful sit-in until the matter is resolved.
