Priyanka Gandhi’s Guwahati Visit: A Game-Changer for Congress in Assam?
Congress National General Secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will visit Guwahati on February 18 and 19 to lead high-level consultations on candidate selection and election strategy for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The two-day visit, confirmed by the party, places her at the centre of the Congress’s preparatory push as the state moves toward the polls.
She is scheduled to arrive at the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, on February 18 and will chair meetings of the screening committee constituted for Assam. The screening committee, which she heads for the state, is responsible for evaluating prospective candidates and shortlisting names for the Assembly contests.
Following the screening committee session, Priyanka Gandhi will meet the state Congress political affairs committee. The day’s agenda includes successive consultations with chairpersons of state Congress committees, Congress MLAs, district unit presidents, leaders of the party’s four frontal organisations, and the leader of the Congress Legislative Party in Assam, according to official communication.
Party sources indicated that deliberations on the first day are expected to continue until around 10 pm, after which she will remain overnight in Guwahati. On the morning of February 19, she will resume consultations with Assam Congress working presidents, Members of Parliament, and representatives from various party cells and departments to further refine candidate lists and strategy.
Later on February 19, Priyanka Gandhi is scheduled to visit the Manabendra Sarma Complex to meet block Congress committee presidents and other organisational office-bearers from across the state. The meetings aim to align grassroots leadership with the party’s selection process and campaign plans.
With the Congress formally initiating its candidate selection across constituencies, this visit marks a critical organisational phase ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, signalling the party’s intensified focus on candidate vetting and electoral coordination in the state.
