Prithviraj’s Powerful Stand on Hema Committee Report and Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘Just Because I Haven’t Faced…’
Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has publicly criticized the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following the revelations of the Justice Hema Committee report. The report highlights severe issues within the Malayalam film industry, including sexual harassment, gender bias, lack of basic facilities, and pay disparities. Prithviraj, renowned for his role in “The Goat Life,” expressed strong disapproval of AMMA’s inadequate response to complaints from survivors. Specifically, he referenced the organization’s dismissal of a complaint made by his “Avan Chandiyude Makan” co-star Sridevika against director Thulasidas, calling for more robust intervention and actions from AMMA.
In contrast, veteran actors Mohanlal and Mammootty have remained silent about both the report and the sexual assault allegations against several industry figures. Prithviraj underscored his commitment to addressing these issues, stating that he was among the first to provide a statement to the Justice Hema Committee and calls for urgent actions against those found guilty. He stressed the necessity of dismantling any influential groups that may be perpetuating these problems within the industry, advocating for the grievances of affected individuals to be seriously considered.
The release of the Justice Hema Committee report has created significant upheaval in the Malayalam film industry. Filmmaker Ranjith resigned from his role as chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy following sexual misconduct allegations by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra. Additionally, veteran actor Siddique, who served as the general secretary of AMMA, stepped down amidst accusations of sexual abuse by actress Revathy Sampath, prompting him to file a police complaint in response.
AMMA has since responded to the report, welcoming its findings but denying the existence of any powerful exploitative groups and dismissing the claims of the casting couch prevalent in the industry. The circumstances surrounding these developments indicate a potentially transformative period for Malayalam cinema, spotlighting necessary reforms and accountability.
