Minister Orders Immediate Restoration; Urgent Temporary Measures
Silchar, Feb 12 — A day after the Anipur Bridge in Sribhumi district collapsed on Wednesday, Feb 11, Cabinet Minister Krishnendu Paul visited the site on Thursday to assess damage, order immediate safety measures and push for rapid restoration of the vital crossing that links Anipur market and surrounding localities. Two people were grievously injured in the collapse and motorists and passengers were left stranded in the immediate aftermath.
During a detailed on-site inspection, Paul spoke with officials present to review steps needed to restore connectivity as quickly as possible. He held a telephonic discussion with the Commissioner of the Public Works Department (PWD) in the presence of the Executive Engineer of the Patharkandi–Ratabari (T) Division to coordinate the response.
Following the call, the minister instructed the urgent dismantling of the collapsed structure to remove hazards and ordered repair and reconstruction work to begin on a war footing to minimise public inconvenience. “Ensuring public safety and the swift restoration of connectivity remain our top priorities. All necessary resources and administrative support will be extended to complete the work within the shortest possible time,” Paul said.
Recognising the bridge’s role as the main communication link for Anipur market and adjacent areas, Paul directed authorities to arrange adequate temporary measures so people can move safely until the bridge is fully restored. He also emphasised strict adherence to safety protocols and close monitoring of the restoration process.
Of the two people hurt when the bridge gave way, one was taken to Sribhumi Civil Hospital and the other admitted to the Chargola Model Primary Health Centre (MPHC). Local residents reported panic and disruption as the collapse left vehicles and commuters trapped or delayed in the immediate moments afterwards.
Officials at the site are preparing short-term traffic arrangements and assessing the work and material needs for reconstruction, while the PWD coordinates clearance and engineering assessments to expedite reopening of this critical link.
