Five Charged Under MCOCA: Major Organised Crime Breakthrough

Five accused in the firing at filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Juhu residence have been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and remanded to police custody until February 17, a special court was told on Wednesday, with investigators saying the attack was intended to create terror in Mumbai. The five were produced before the special MCOCA court after their earlier police custody ended, and the court observed the incident could be the “tip of the iceberg.”

At least five rounds were fired at the first floor of Shetty’s nine‑storey building in the Juhu area at 12:45 a.m. on February 1, police said. One bullet struck the glass of a gym inside the building. The Anti‑Extortion Cell of the Mumbai police crime branch is probing the case.

So far, police have arrested Aditya Gayaki (19), Siddharth Yenpure (20), Samarth Pomaji (18), Swapnil Sakat (23) and Asaram Fasale in connection with the incident. Authorities said some of the accused are already linked to serious offences, prompting investigators to invoke MCOCA. The court remanded the five to further police custody while the inquiry continues.

“Some of the accused are already involved in serious offences. The crime branch has, therefore, invoked MCOCA,” an official told the court. Investigators described the invocation as necessary given the alleged scale and intent of the attack.

Lawrence Bishnoi gang member Shubham Lonkar is among the wanted in the case and has purportedly taken responsibility for the firing in a social media post, police said. Lonkar is also wanted in connection with the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique and the firing outside actor Salman Khan’s residence in Bandra. The probe by the crime branch’s Anti‑Extortion Cell is ongoing.
