Gujarat Faces Severe Flooding Amid Torrential Rains: Key Updates
Last Updated: August 26, 2024, 19:08 IST
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall in various Gujarat districts, including Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Amreli, and Bhavnagar, expected to persist until Tuesday morning. Several regions of the state have experienced severe flooding and localized infrastructure damage, notably in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar where streets are waterlogged and roads closed.
Navsari faces particularly dire conditions, prompting the IMD to issue a "red alert." Khergam taluka in Navsari recorded 356 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, as revealed by the State Emergency Operation Centre. South Gujarat saw mass displacements, with hundreds relocated to safer zones. In Morbi district, an NDRF search operation is underway to locate seven individuals swept away while crossing a flooded causeway; ten others were rescued.
Flooding has also disrupted rail services, notably affecting trains like the Vadodara–Jamnagar and Vadodara–Ahmedabad Intercity Expresses. The Western Railway reported waterlogging at Bajva station as the primary cause of disruption.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas and assured all possible help, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah offering central government assistance. Fishermen along the coast have been advised to stay ashore due to expected adverse conditions.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam’s water level has surged to 135.30 meters, nearing its full capacity. Southern Gujarat districts have received over 105 percent of their annual average rainfall, the highest in the state. Reservoirs are significantly filled, prompting alerts for 72 dams.
