Himanta Under Fire as Gogoi Mulls Juvenile Justice Action
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on February 9 held a press conference in Assam, led by its president and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi, to strongly rebut charges by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma that Gogoi has links to Pakistan and that his wife, Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, shared sensitive information with Pakistani authorities. Gogoi called the allegations baseless and criticised the CM for raising them publicly before national media.
Addressing reporters, Gogoi said the Chief Minister had “crossed all limits” by disclosing personal details about his minor children during the interaction. “The Assam Chief Minister has stooped to such a low level that he exposed details of my children, who are barely five and nine years old. These details are meant to be private, yet they were made public,” he said.
Gogoi issued a stern warning while emphasising restraint from his side and the party. “Even we know details of your children, and the entire Guwahati knows about them, but I do not want to speak about it. Do not force me to do so,” he told the CM, signalling that the confrontation could intensify if personal lines continue to be crossed.
The Congress leader said the party would explore legal remedies under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, citing Section 74, and would consult its Delhi-based legal cell to decide on appropriate legal action. He framed the move as aimed at protecting the privacy and welfare of minors rather than as a political retaliation.
The press meet represents a sharp escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress in Assam, shifting the dispute from allegations tied to national security to questions about the privacy and protection of children. The episode is likely to deepen tensions between the two parties as both sides respond publicly and legally.
