UP Minister Raises Alarm Over Voter Registration Irregularities in Lucknow

Uttar Pradesh Minister Ravindra Jaiswal has raised concerns regarding the ongoing Special Immunity Review (SIR) of the electoral roll in his Varanasi North constituency, alleging irregularities involving multiple registrations of voters at various polling booths. His comments come amid opposition parties highlighting purported flaws in the SIR process, adding further intensity to the ongoing debate.

Speaking to the media in Varanasi, Jaiswal, who serves as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Stamp and Court Registration Fees, presented a list of 9,200 voters whose names were allegedly registered in multiple locations. He has called for a thorough investigation into these claims, suggesting that many of these voters belong to a particular community and labeled the situation as “vote jihad.”

“We physically verified each voter’s name before preparing the report for inquiry. During this review, we identified 9,200 names registered at various locations,” Jaiswal stated.

According to him, party workers discovered that some individuals were registered at as many as five different places, which he termed “vote jihad” during a phone interview with The Indian Express. In a widely circulated video, Jaiswal expressed, “I believe that every person in India should have their name on the voter list at only one place. If a name appears at two places, then what does the SIR signify? The purpose of the SIR was to conduct a thorough and in-depth verification. Yet, we have found over 9,200 such names in my assembly constituency alone. We are still waiting for reports from other areas.”

He further elaborated that when Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and party workers conducted door-to-door verifications, they found instances where the same individual was registered multiple times, often under different familial names. “We verified 90,000 voters so far, identifying 9,200 names that appeared up to five times,” he noted in the video.

Jaiswal’s allegations and the accompanying demands for scrutiny are expected to generate significant discourse as the electoral process unfolds in the region.
