Why Girls Felt Devastated After Their Father Took Away Their Phones
Three minor sisters from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, tragically took their own lives earlier this week after becoming distressed over their father’s decision to confiscate their mobile phones. According to police reports, the father believed the girls were excessively engrossed in Korean culture, which affected their ability to play online games and communicate with friends in South Korea. Subsequently, the father sold their phones, leading to their despair. On the night of the incident, the sisters attempted to use their mother’s phone but were unable to access their preferred Korean app. Forensic teams have since seized this device but found no traces of the app.
The investigation is ongoing, with the police awaiting fingerprints and a handwritten suicide note sent to a forensic laboratory. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans Hindon) Nimish Patil reported that the father, Chetan Kumar, previously faced scrutiny after the suspicious death of his live-in partner in 2015, which was later ruled a suicide. The deceased sisters-Nishika (16), Prachi (14), and Pakhi (12)—jumped from the ninth floor of their residential building in Bharat City Society.
Authorities have revealed that Chetan Kumar has three wives, all biological sisters: Sujata (Nishika’s mother), Heena (Prachi and Pakhi’s mother), and Tina. Investigations indicate that the sisters were closer to their father than their mothers, as evidenced by their suicide note, which did not mention their mothers at all. Cybercrime teams are currently trying to trace the new owners of the sold mobile phones using their IMEI numbers, aiming to recover data related to the Korean apps the girls used.
Current evidence suggests a strong attachment to Korean culture among the sisters and highlights potential family discord. Preliminary findings also include a nine-page diary found in their room. Chetan Kumar had bought Nishika a new phone about three months ago and one for Prachi just two weeks prior to the incident. The three sisters were cremated at Nigam Bodh Ghat in Delhi on Wednesday evening. Police are treating the case as a suicide while examining all related factors, including family dynamics and the father’s claims regarding the girls’ online gaming habits.
