A 20-year-old woman from Manipur was tragically killed after being struck by a Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus in the Marathahalli police station area, prompting significant public outrage following the release of disturbing video footage on social media. The incident took place on Friday but only gained widespread attention on Saturday morning.
The victim, identified as Hanna Inaka, was riding a scooter with a friend when the bus allegedly collided with them from behind. The force of the impact threw her onto the road, where she was initially struck by the front wheel of the bus and subsequently run over by the rear wheels, according to police reports. Despite being rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, she succumbed shortly after. The graphic video of the accident has ignited strong public backlash, with many residents accusing the bus driver of reckless and negligent driving.
Authorities have confirmed that a case has been filed, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the precise sequence of events and hold responsible parties accountable. This incident has reignited serious concerns regarding road safety and the management of BMTC operations in Bengaluru.
Fatal accidents involving BMTC buses are not uncommon. Earlier this year, on January 10, a 28-year-old man named Kanakaraj from Tamil Nadu was killed when he fell from his two-wheeler and was run over by a BMTC bus near Electronics City. Last November, two separate incidents involving BMTC buses resulted in fatalities in the Vijaya Nagar and Madiwala areas. Additionally, a 58-year-old woman named Mala was killed by a BMTC electric bus in the Vijayanagar area on October 26 while crossing the road near the Hampi Nagar bus stop.
The latest tragedy has intensified demands among the public for stricter accountability, improved oversight of public transport drivers, and more rigorous enforcement of road safety measures throughout Bengaluru.
