PALLEKELE: England all-rounder Sam Curran has expressed his comfort with a flexible role within the national team, a quality that has become essential as the squad gains momentum ahead of the T20 World Cup. Curran’s versatility was a key factor in England’s recent 3-0 T20I series triumph over Sri Lanka, where his all-round abilities significantly influenced games played in varied conditions.
The highlight of the series came during the third and final T20I, where Curran scored a steady 58 runs off 48 balls, helping England set a competitive total of 128. This performance laid the groundwork for a successful defense and earned him the Player of the Match award. However, Curran’s contributions were not confined to a single match; in the second T20I, he played a crucial role by scoring an unbeaten 20 runs, aiding England in a challenging chase of 168 alongside Tom Banton. Additionally, he made an early impact in the series with a hat-trick in the opening match.
After the series, Curran acknowledged the evolving nature of his responsibilities, expressing satisfaction with his adaptable role. He stated, “I know my role with the ball is going to be quite flexible, and I’m pretty happy with that.”
At 25, Curran stressed his aim to impact games in whichever way needed. “Just hoping that when I don’t bowl well, I can bat well, and when I don’t bat well, I can bowl well. I guess that’s my logic,” he explained.
Since making his T20 World Cup debut in 2022, where he mainly bowled, Curran’s role has expanded. He now often bats at No. 6, a shift that reflects his growth as a player. This development was highlighted in a remarkable 2022 campaign, in which England won the T20 World Cup and Curran was named Player of the Tournament.
Curran credits much of his progress to experiences gained in franchise cricket, believing this has enhanced both his batting and bowling skills. He remarked, “I love my batting, I love my bowling,” adding that he is keen to keep delivering for England on the international stage.
