Guwahati, Feb 4: A significant gathering of high school students from remote areas participated in the fifth annual Orang Nature Camp held from January 30 to February 2 at Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve (ONP&TR) in Assam. This initiative was organized under the auspices of Aaranyak and the Orang Tiger Reserve Authority, in collaboration with the local organization Wild Wings and supported by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF).

The four-day residential awareness program, set in the natural habitat of ONP&TR, which houses precious species like tigers and one-horned rhinos, educated participating students about the crucial importance of nature conservation. The camp provided a platform for students to engage with wildlife conservation experts, who delivered presentations aimed at inspiring them to become advocates for the environment and betterment of the Orang Tiger Reserve.

The program commenced on January 30, presided over by Pradipta Baruah, Director of Orang Tiger Reserve, alongside notable attendees like Dr. Debo Kumar Dutta, Senior Scientist and Deputy Director of Rhino Research and Conservation Division (RRCD) of Aaranyak, Bijay Sankar Bora, Publicity Secretary of Aaranyak, and conservationist Swapan Nath from Kaziranga.

During his address, Baruah stressed the importance of Orang’s rich biodiversity and highlighted the future generation’s key role in preserving these resources. Dr. Dutta and Bora elaborated on the significant contributions students could make to enhance conservation efforts. Key organizer Arif Hussain from Aaranyak detailed the camp’s goals during the inauguration.

A total of 33 students and three teachers from seven schools participated in this awareness initiative, including Sialmari High School, Bechimari ME School, Keramot Ali ME School, Dokhin Borsola High School, Ballav Bhai Higher Secondary, Fatasimolu ME School, and Royal Brilliant Academy. The program featured contributions from various resource persons, including Aaranyak officials and researchers who conducted lectures on several conservation topics. Activities such as PowerPoint presentations, environmental games, nature trails, and conservation dramas enriched the experience for the students.

Upon the program’s conclusion, participants received educational kits, materials, and certificates. Local conservationist Khairul Basher, Baharul Islam, President of Fatasimolu EDC, along with Aaranyak staff and members, were present, contributing their expertise to ensure the event’s success. The students were accompanied by teachers from Borsola High School, Ballav Bhai Higher Secondary, and Royal Brilliant Academy, fostering a supportive learning environment throughout the camp.
