New Government in Manipur? NDA MLAs Rush to Delhi as Crisis Looms
The political landscape in Manipur is set for significant changes as the majority of legislators from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), alongside leaders from its allied parties and the state BJP president, traveled to New Delhi on Sunday. This flurry of activity coincides with the impending conclusion of President’s Rule in the state, which has been under central governance since February 13, 2025, after then-Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned amid threats of a non-confidence motion.
A crucial high-level meeting is scheduled in Delhi as President’s Rule is poised to expire on February 12, intensifying consultations among alliance partners. President’s Rule in Manipur was extended for six months after being invoked due to ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, leading to over 260 fatalities and displacing more than 60,000 individuals. As the deadline draws near, discussions about reinstating an elected government are gaining traction across the state’s political spectrum.
Before departing for Delhi, BJP MLA N Biren Singh addressed reporters at Imphal International Airport, stating that all NDA alliance legislators had been invited to the forthcoming meeting. He noted that recent gatherings among BJP legislators have yielded important developments, and with all NDA members summoned, discussions are likely to shift toward forming a new government.
Janghemlung Panmei, an MLA from the National People’s Party (NPP), expressed cautious optimism, reaffirming their commitment to pursue positive outcomes for Manipur, although he acknowledged that the path forward would only become apparent after the meeting. Similarly, A Sharda Devi, the BJP state president, expressed confidence that the discussions in Delhi could lead to a significant step toward establishing a popular government. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the meeting will focus specifically on government formation, potentially including Kuki-Zo legislators in the talks.
In the 60-member Manipur Assembly, a simple majority is reached with 31 seats. Currently, the BJP holds 32 seats, supported by allies such as the NPP with seven MLAs, JD(U) with six, NPF with five, and the Kuki People’s Alliance with two. In contrast, the Congress commands five seats, with three Independents also present.
