Congress Labels Corporate-Friendly Policies as Disappointing: What’s Next?
The Congress party has strongly criticized the Union Budget, labeling it as “totally lacklustre” and claiming it fails to deliver on the expectations set prior to its announcement. The party contends that the budget does not address critical issues for farmers or provide sufficient employment opportunities for the youth. Jairam Ramesh, Congress’s general secretary for Communications, expressed that the budget speech by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lacked transparency, offering no clear indications of budgetary allocations for essential programs and schemes.
Ramesh noted that after a brief review of the budget documents, it became evident that Budget 2026/27 does not match the hype surrounding it. He emphasized on social media, “It was totally lacklustre,” reaffirming that the speech failed to clarify fiscal priorities. Similarly, K C Venugopal, another Congress general secretary, argued that the budget is tailored for large corporations rather than the average citizen, questioning, “How can people welcome this budget? There is nothing in it. It is completely hollow.”
Randeep Surjewala, also from Congress, described the budget as “politically directionless” and “policy-wise bankrupt,” condemning it for lacking substance despite numerous committee recommendations. Pramod Tiwari, deputy leader of Congress in the Rajya Sabha, labeled the budget as the “most disappointing” he has witnessed, asserting that it does not cater to the needs of farmers, youth, or the broader economy.
In highlighting the budget’s shortcomings, Tiwari remarked on the visible disappointment among the ruling party’s members, stating, “There cannot be a more disappointing budget than this, which has cheated people.” He characterized the budget as offering nothing substantial, equating it to a “toy which does not even have sound,” and pointed out the collapse of the Sensex as a testament to its inadequacies. He cautioned that the MSME sector, expected to be bolstered, will instead suffer further challenges. The overall sentiment among Congress leaders reflects profound dissatisfaction with the government’s fiscal direction and its implications for the nation.
