Unite and Inspire: First Edition of Asia Pacific Down Syndrome Federation Games Kicks Off with Enthusiasm!

Mohan Natarajan from Pollachi, Coimbatore, beamed with pride as he watched his 12-year-old daughter compete in the roller-skating event at the Asia Pacific Down Syndrome Federation (APDSF) games in Chennai on Thursday. Organized in collaboration with Special Olympics Bharat, these games aim to unite athletes with Down syndrome from across the Asia Pacific, celebrating their abilities, determination, and the spirit of sportsmanship.

The inaugural two-day event featured over 30 international participants from countries such as China and New Zealand, alongside 200 children from India, competing in various sports, including skating, swimming, running, walking, and shot put. Mr. Natarajan highlighted the significance of including sports for children with disabilities, noting that fitness is crucial for those with Down syndrome, who often face lower immunity levels and weight gain. “Sports provide a platform for socializing and improving communication as they meet people from diverse backgrounds. Ultimately, we want our child to shine and excel in society,” he said.

Rekha Ramachandran, the representative of the Indian contingent, emphasized the games’ role in fostering communication, discipline, and social interaction. She explained that competitors are categorized by age and abilities, reinforcing the event’s inclusive nature. “When you see someone with Down syndrome, remember that, apart from the extra chromosome, they may also have hypotonia (low muscle tone). There are limitations, but it’s essential to look beyond them,” she stated.

Meghanatha Reddy, Member Secretary of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, addressed participants with an encouraging message: “Every child here is a champion. Just participating is a testament to your strength and spirit.” This sentiment encapsulated the event’s ethos, showcasing not just the competitive aspect but also the supportive community built around these young athletes.

The APDSF games represent a meaningful step toward greater inclusivity in sports, providing children with disabilities the opportunity to engage in physical activity and connect with others in a joyous setting. As these young athletes take to the track and rink, they exemplify resilience and the determination to excel against the odds, a powerful reminder of the potential present in every child.

As the event unfolds, it highlights the importance of fostering environments where children with disabilities can thrive, not just in sports but in society at large. The applause and cheers echoing throughout the venues serve as a resounding reminder that every effort to promote inclusion and ability is a victory in itself.

With initiatives like these, the future looks bright for children with Down syndrome as they continue to break barriers and inspire us all through their sportsmanship and spirit.
