Eleven members of the Tablighi Jamaat were severely assaulted late on January 28 while traveling through the Old Bongaigaon locality in Bongaigaon district, Assam. The group, which included elder citizens, was returning to their homes in Barpeta’s Kalgachia area after a trip to Kolkata. This brutal attack has sent panic through the local community, raising significant concerns about commuter safety in the region.
Witnesses report that the victims were in two e-rickshaws when they were intercepted by unidentified individuals. The assailants forcibly took the keys from the drivers, hurled communal slurs, and physically attacked the members of the group. Among the injured were several elderly individuals, and the aggressive nature of the assault necessitated immediate medical attention for some victims due to the severity of their injuries.
Police were alerted by eyewitnesses to the incident and arrived at the scene to assist the injured Tablighi Jamaat members. The victims were subsequently taken to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital for treatment.
