Government Educational Institutions and Offices Will Remain Closed: What You Need to Know
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has tragically died in a plane crash that occurred on Wednesday, an incident that has left the entire state in mourning. In response to this unfortunate event, the state government has declared a three-day period of mourning, during which all government and private educational institutions and offices in Maharashtra will remain closed until January 30. The national flag will be flown at half-mast during this period, and all official and entertainment-related events have been cancelled.
According to reports from national news outlets, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that the state will observe official mourning until January 30. The crash took place while a chartered plane was en route from Mumbai to Baramati, roughly 45 minutes after takeoff. Ajit Pawar was scheduled to attend three electoral rallies that day. The incident was so severe that as the plane crashed to the ground, it caught fire, resulting in the deaths of all five individuals on board, including the Deputy Chief Minister.
Identifying the bodies recovered from the wreckage proved challenging initially. However, identification of Ajit Pawar was eventually facilitated through personal belongings like a wristwatch and clothing. Reports from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reveal that the aircraft took off from Mumbai at 8:00 AM and attempted an emergency landing at 8:45 AM. Unfortunately, due to a mechanical failure just before landing, the aircraft crashed. An investigation committee has already been established to look into the incident.
Sources from the DGCA indicate that two crew members and three passengers were aboard the aircraft. No distress signals or mayday calls were issued before the incident. At the time of the crash, visibility at Baramati was extremely low due to overcast conditions, making it difficult for the pilots to clearly see the runway. Following a failed first landing attempt, the plane made a second approach and crashed approximately 100 feet from the runway, resulting in a massive explosion and complete destruction of the aircraft.
The aircraft involved in this tragic incident was a Learjet 45, manufactured by Bombardier Aerospace. Concerns had previously been raised regarding the safety of this 15-year-old aircraft model, especially following a similar aviation accident that occurred in Mumbai in 2023. That incident involved another aircraft coming from Visakhapatnam that crashed during landing. Currently, a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is underway, as expressions of deep sympathy pour in from across the nation in response to Ajit Pawar’s death.
