Nagaland Government Reaffirms Commitment to Timely Naga Political Solution
Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio emphasized the urgent need for resolving the Naga political issue during the 77th Republic Day celebration in Kohima on January 26. He stated that the ongoing non-settlement of this issue significantly hinders development and adversely affects the lives of citizens. Addressing the audience at the Civil Secretariat Plaza, Dr. Rio described the political situation as one of “paramount importance.”
He remarked, “While we take pride in our past achievements, we cannot overlook the unresolved Naga Political Issue. Its non-settlement continues to impact all aspects of our people’s lives, obstructing our collective efforts for enhanced development.” Dr. Rio also mentioned the state’s Political Affairs Committee, which includes ministers, political party representatives, and Members of Parliament. This committee has been actively discussing major issues related to the Naga political situation and plans to intensify its facilitation efforts.
Dr. Rio urged all negotiating parties to consider the aspirations of the people, calling for a united effort to secure an honorable, inclusive solution to the Naga Political Issue without further delays. He also addressed the concerns of Eastern Nagaland and the demand for the establishment of the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA). The Chief Minister noted that while his government is striving to bring development to all regions, initiatives in Eastern Nagaland have not been sufficient, leading to persistent disparities.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing grievances in these districts, stating, “We are moving forward in full understanding with the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation regarding the request for creating FNTA.” The state government has communicated its viewpoints to the Indian government concerning this matter.
Highlighting the overall security situation in Nagaland, Dr. Rio declared the state one of the safest in India, with a low crime rate of 84.9 per lakh population, as reported by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The Chief Minister commended the efforts of the police and civil society in maintaining law and order, noting that Nagaland Police has been enhancing its capabilities in response to modern crimes, including establishing measures for cybercrime prevention.
Dr. Rio reported significant actions against drug trafficking, revealing that in the past year, Nagaland Police seized 230 kg of drugs and arrested 218 individuals involved in narcotics cases. He expressed pride in Nagaland’s journey since its establishment as the 16th state in 1963 and called on every citizen to renew their commitment to fostering a more developed and prosperous Nagaland.
