Unveiling Antonio Costa: Insights on India’s Republic Day 2026 Guest
President Droupadi Murmu led the Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2026, from Kartavya Path in New Delhi, where Mr. Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, was the Chief Guest. Alongside him was Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. Republic Day commemorates the day in 1950 when India adopted its Constitution, establishing itself as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. This year’s celebrations focused on the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram,” reflecting the day’s immense historical significance.
Antonio Costa, the Chief Guest, is a prominent political figure in Portugal. He has served as the President of the European Council since 2024, making him a key player in the highest political institution of the European Union. This council comprises the heads of state or government from all EU member states, responsible for providing strategic direction and priorities for the Union, while not directly creating laws.
Previously, from 2015 to 2024, Costa was the Prime Minister of Portugal. Born in Lisbon on July 17, 1961, he is married and has a son and a daughter. Costa’s political career began as a Member of Parliament, and he has held several significant government roles, including Secretary of State, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Justice, and Minister of the Interior. His presence at India’s Republic Day not only signifies the strengthening ties between India and Portugal but also highlights the collaborative efforts within the European Union.
