Unlocking Potential: Mizoram’s 50,000 Hectares Ready for Rubber Cultivation
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced on January 24 that the state has approximately 50,000 hectares of land suitable for rubber cultivation, emphasizing the government’s plan to expand rubber plantations and establish Mizoram as a key player in rubber production. His remarks came during a visit to rubber plantations in Chungtlang village, located in the north-western Mamit district.
The Chief Minister highlighted that rubber is native to Mizoram, with organized cultivation beginning in 1982 through a government initiative. He pointed out that prior to the Zoram People’s Movement government coming to power in December 2023, only about 3,025 hectares were used for rubber cultivation under various government programs.
Under the Chief Minister’s Rubber Mission, the state government has set an ambitious goal to cultivate 11,500 hectares of rubber over the next five years. To support this initiative, they have already approved the acquisition of 100 rubber roller machines and tapping tools aimed at assisting farmers and plantation workers.
These steps are part of a larger strategy to bolster livelihoods, improve farm incomes, and transform Mizoram into a significant contributor to India’s rubber production. Officials stated that approximately 450,000 rubber saplings have already been planted over 1,000 hectares in Mamit and Kolasib districts as part of this mission. This year, the Land Resources, Soil and Water Conservation Department plans to plant more than 1.15 million rubber saplings across 2,575 hectares in various regions.
Additionally, the government is prioritizing the development of access roads to plantations, providing rubber roller machines and tapping tools, and facilitating the marketing of rubber products to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
