Transforming India’s Future: NE’s Role in Modi’s Ashtalakshmi Vision
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has placed the “Ashtalakshmi,” representing the eight states of Northeast India, at the forefront of the nation’s development agenda. During a virtual event on January 23, Scindia inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for eight significant development projects in Tripura, which amount to a total investment of Rs 365 crore, including an Rs 81-crore solar microgrid project. He emphasized that under PM Modi’s “Ashtalakshmi” vision, the Northeast is evolving from a mere geographic boundary to a vital engine for India’s growth.
These developments aim to enhance road connectivity, boost tourism, improve energy supply, and facilitate comprehensive development in tribal areas. Scindia stated that it is now a requirement for all 52 central ministries to dedicate 10 percent of their budgets specifically for the Northeast’s development. He also noted that nearly Rs 1 lakh crore has been invested in the region over the past year.
Scindia highlighted that Tripura has achieved a growth rate of 10.5 to 11 percent over the last decade and is now recognized as a power-surplus state. Among the inaugurated projects is the solar microgrid initiative, which will provide reliable electricity to 274 remote villages, benefitting over 9,700 families in isolated areas.
Additionally, the minister inaugurated a veterinary clinical complex at Radha Kishore Nagar in West Tripura, and laid the groundwork for various road connectivity initiatives in North Tripura and Dhalai districts. These projects are being financed through the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East Region (PM-DevINE), the North Eastern Council (NEC), and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS-Roads).
Tripura’s Chief Minister Manik Saha elaborated during the event at Pragna Bhavan that the DoNER Ministry has formed several high-level task forces to map out critical interventions and devise actionable strategies for the integrated development of the North East Economic Corridor. These task forces were established following the 72nd plenary session of the NEC, which took place in November 2024 in Agartala and was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Saha pointed out the growing investment interest in the Northeast, mentioning that at the last year’s Investors’ Summit in Delhi, which PM Modi inaugurated, investment proposals totaling Rs 30,000 crore were received, with around Rs 15,000 crore allocated specifically for Tripura, attributed to the state’s prevailing peace and stability.
Scindia’s visit to Tripura marks the beginning of a three-day tour to the Northeastern state, where he will unveil multiple infrastructure and development projects spanning tourism, road enhancement, and the preservation of religious and cultural heritage. Funding for these projects will also be sourced from PM-DevINE, NESIDS-Roads, and NEC initiatives.
