The controversy erupted late in stoppage time when Morocco was awarded a controversial penalty following a VAR review, just moments after Senegal had a goal disallowed. After a delay of about 16 minutes, play resumed when the Senegal players returned to the pitch. In response, CAF issued a strong statement condemning the players’ and officials’ behavior, labeling the walk-off unacceptable. The governing body emphasized its commitment to maintaining respect for match officials and tournament organizers. “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behavior which occurs during matches, particularly those targeting referees or match organizers,” the statement said. Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane expressed discomfort over the protest, suggesting that abandoning the match would have given a negative image of African football. “It would have been a shame and sad to see this kind of scenario happen,” he remarked. “Just imagine going into the locker rooms and the match stopping there. That would give a negative image of our football.” Mane also stressed the growth of African football on the global stage, stating, “I’d rather lose than see this kind of thing happen to our football.”
CAF is expected to make a final decision on potential sanctions after completing its disciplinary review.
