In a significant move toward safeguarding the rights and welfare of women and children, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of East Jaintia Hills held a legal awareness program on January 17 in Khaidong village. The event, themed ‘Ghar Ghar Mein Nyay Ki Jagriti,’ focused on issues concerning crimes against women under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act (POSH Act) and the prevention of child marriages.
The program featured Keynote speaker PN Swer, Legal Aid Counsel from DLSA East Jaintia Hills, alongside community members and the village headman, D. Sutnga. Swer addressed critical legal frameworks aimed at protecting vulnerable groups, specifically referencing the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. He articulated that any form of abuse-be it physical, emotional, or economic-within a household is subject to legal penalties. He further clarified that neglect by a husband regarding the essential needs of his wife and children could also result in legal action, potentially requiring the court to mandate maintenance and child support.
Swer elaborated on the POSH Act, which empowers women to challenge inappropriate behavior in the workplace. He emphasized that women have the right to seek legal recourse if they face harassment, including the possibility of compensation for emotional distress. He strongly urged women not to resign themselves to abuse, asserting that the law is designed to protect their rights.
On the topic of child marriage, Swer issued a stern warning that marrying individuals under the age of 18 is illegal and carries criminal repercussions. He highlighted detrimental long-term impacts of early marriage on education and health, urging the community to advocate for education and skill development. He stressed that basic literacy is essential for accessing available vocational training and employment opportunities.
Additionally, Swer cautioned against the potential misuse of protective laws, warning that making false accusations is itself an offense under the law. This comprehensive legal awareness program marks a crucial step in educating the community about their rights and responsibilities, fostering a more informed and supportive environment for women and children.
