Will Disney’s Unstoppable Box Office Reign in 2025 Secure a Powerful Victory in 2026?
In 2025, the Walt Disney Company topped the domestic box office, buoyed by its iconic brands and beloved franchises. Full-year ticket sales in the United States and Canada experienced a 4% increase from 2024, totaling $9.05 billion. Disney led this surge, raking in $2.49 billion-accounting for 27.5% of the market share, according to data from Comscore. Warner Bros. Discovery followed with $1.9 billion, or 21%, and Universal secured $1.7 billion, equating to 19.7%. Together, these three studios dominated nearly 70% of the domestic box office landscape.
Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, highlighted the significant advantages these studios hold, stating, “[Warner Bros., Disney and Universal] have the advantage of having at least two or more distinct and successful sub-brands… that enables these studios to dominate at least in terms of the overall box office and percentage of the marketplace that they control.” Disney’s notable success stemmed largely from its established intellectual properties. Four of its films made the top 10 highest-grossing domestic releases for the year, including the live-action “Lilo & Stitch,” a sequel to “Zootopia,” “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” and another entry in the “Avatar” franchise.
Dergarabedian remarked on the industry’s reliance on familiar brands, noting, “Most years at the box office are dominated by known IP and non-original content.” In fact, among the ten highest-grossing films in 2025, only Warner Bros.’ original title “Sinners” broke the trend. While some high-budget originals found success in 2025, the upcoming slate for 2026 is poised to feature even more known properties and sequels, particularly from Disney.
The studio plans to release its first “Star Wars” film since 2019, titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” followed by “Toy Story 5” in June and a live-action “Moana” in July. The much-anticipated “Avengers: Doomsday” is set for a December release. Additionally, a new Spider-Man film will arrive in theaters in 2026, as part of a collaboration with Sony, although Sony will retain the bulk of the box office profits while Disney secures merchandise sales.
The box office is also expected to be energized by Warner Bros.’ “Supergirl” and “Dune: Part Three,” Universal’s “Minions 3,” “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” Lionsgate’s “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” and Sony’s third “Jumanji” film. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango, offers a positive outlook for the future, stating, “As we look into 2026, there’s plenty of optimism to go around.” He emphasizes that the lineup is rich in top-tier franchises, family-oriented content, and potential surprises across various genres, leaving audiences eager for what’s to come.
As the film industry approaches 2026, with a wealth of anticipated sequels and familiar IPs, Disney remains a formidable player in shaping box office trends and audience experiences.
