BJP Alleges Data Withholding by SPCS in SI Recruitment Controversy

The State BJP has voiced strong objections regarding the Sikkim Public Service Commission’s (SPSC) failure to comply with the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2005. According to State BJP spokesperson Sangay Gyatso Bhutia, the commission’s refusal to disclose information about the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment results has not only undermined transparency but has also fueled public skepticism regarding the integrity of the selection process.

This backlash follows the announcement of the Sub-Inspector results on November 26, 2025, which triggered widespread public discontent across Sikkim. Candidates and civil society groups leveled serious allegations of nepotism, favoritism, and misconduct against the SPSC.

To address these concerns, the BJP submitted an RTI application on November 28, 2025, requesting comprehensive details about the examination and evaluation processes. Bhutia mentioned that the intention was to give the SPSC an opportunity to clear its name and establish its credibility with the people of Sikkim.

On December 16, 2025, the BJP received a response from the State Public Information Officer (SPIO). However, instead of providing the requested information, the SPSC cited provisions from the SPSC Amendment Rule 2017 to deny access to the data. Bhutia criticized this approach, stating, “The SPSC is hiding behind legal technicalities to avoid basic accountability. By denying information that affects the future of thousands of Sikkimese youth, the commission is acting against the larger public interest. When a constitutional body uses loopholes to deny society the right to facts, it isn’t protecting the law; it is protecting a system many now believe is captured.”

Unsatisfied with what they deemed a misleading and evasive response, the State BJP has formally filed for an Appellate Hearing with the Sikkim Public Service Commission. The party hopes the Appellate Authority will compel the SPIO to release all necessary information promptly, as thousands of candidates’ futures are at stake, and to uphold the principle of meritocracy in Sikkim. “The BJP remains committed to the youth of Sikkim and will continue to fight for our shared future,” concluded Bhutia.
