Tragic Drowning of Zubeen Garg: Swimming Intoxicated Near Singapore Island
Indian singer Zubeen Garg reportedly drowned while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore in September 2025, with a police investigator revealing that he was “severely intoxicated” and not wearing a life vest at the time. This information emerged during a coroner’s court inquiry on January 14.
Assistant Superintendent of Police David Lim, from the Police Coast Guard, stated that the 53-year-old singer had consumed alcohol and declined to wear a life vest before leaping from a yacht into the water. Despite his friends urging him to swim back to the yacht, Garg became motionless while in the water and was later spotted floating face down.
Lim recounted in court that Garg was pulled back onto the yacht and that his friends attempted to resuscitate him. He was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on September 19, 2025. The cause of death was determined to be drowning.
The court learned that Garg was visiting Singapore to participate in the North East India Festival, an event organized by the Assamese community. Renowned in Assam and with a significant following in northeastern India, Garg was considered one of the region’s most influential artists.
ASP Lim was the first to testify at the coroner’s inquiry, which was attended by members of the public, including Garg’s uncle and nephew. The inquiry continues to investigate the events leading up to his death.
