Dominick noted that he initially went to the cupola to photograph Tropical Storm Hone near Hawaii but swiftly pivoted to capture the moon as it began to set. The technical specifications—400mm lens, ISO 500, 1/20000s shutter speed, f2.8, cropped, denoised—were shared in his post, reflecting the precision behind the shot. The post garnered significant traction, amassing over 5.94 lakh views and 17,000 likes, spurring an active discussion among netizens.
When a user questioned the use of 1/20000s shutter speed, Dominick clarified that it was not a typo and mentioned that f2.8, combined with bracketed shots at varying exposure values (1EV steps, 20 fps), helped in capturing the rapidly setting moon due to the ISS’s orbital speed. He revealed the posted image was taken at 21:34:45 GMT, with a mere 14-second gap between the first and last shots.
Dominick also confirmed a preference for using the Nikon Z9 camera for stills and video, over the D5. The astronaut’s post elicited a variety of enthusiastic responses, with some users drawing comparisons to Star Wars and others praising the incredible detail and beauty of the shot.
