Empower Your Voice: Kozhikode Corporation Set to Elect Dynamic Standing Committee Chairpersons on January 13!

The Kozhikode Corporation council is set to elect its standing committee chairpersons on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, following a pivotal election for the standing committees held on January 6 and 7. In this recent election, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) secured a majority in six out of the eight committees, while the United Democratic Front (UDF), despite its overall advantage in the council, managed to dominate only one committee and is tied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in another.

This election was particularly significant as it marked the first time in decades that the council could not reach a consensus on committee allocations, leading to a contested election process. The current council composition includes 35 seats held by the LDF, 28 by the UDF, and 13 by the BJP, which has created a more complex political dynamic. The LDF’s inability to enforce its decisions due to a lack of a clear majority has added tension, contrasting with its past practices.

Despite this, the LDF has navigated some outcomes smoothly; the Finance, Works, and Education standing committees were filled without contest, as the number of nominations matched the available seats. In addition, there were no elections for the Welfare Committee, where the UDF holds a majority, or for the Tax and Appeals Committee, which sees equal representation from the UDF and BJP. The LDF, meanwhile, maintains a majority in the Development, Health, and Town Planning standing committees.

The UDF expected to gain a foothold in two standing committees given its strength within the council. However, disorganization during the nomination process has hindered this aim, leading to an uncertain outcome. Notably, if the LDF member in the Tax and Appeals committee abstains from the chairperson election, the decision will be determined by lot.

The upcoming chairperson election for the Finance standing committee will not require a vote, as it is automatically chaired by the Deputy Mayor, currently S. Jayasree, who previously led the Health standing committee. Reservations for women in leadership roles mean that the chairpersons of the Welfare, Works, and Tax & Appeals committees will also be women, showcasing an advancement in gender representation within the council.

While the LDF has not proposed candidates for these positions, the UDF has put forward IUML-Independent councillor Kavitha Arun as the likely chairperson for the Welfare committee. If the UDF successfully clinches the Tax and Appeals committee, a Congress councillor is expected to take the chair.

As the Kozhikode Corporation council approaches this critical vote, the outcomes will shape the local governance landscape. The evolving power dynamics between the LDF, UDF, and BJP will continue to influence community development and public policy in the region, underscoring the importance of this electoral process in Kerala’s political framework.

Stay tuned for further updates on the council’s developments and implications for Kozhikode’s governance.
