India’s First Hybrid Reusable Rocket, Rhumi 1, Launched by Space Zone India
Tamil Nadu-based space startup, Space Zone India, achieved a significant milestone by launching India’s first hybrid reusable rocket, Rhumi 1. This groundbreaking event took place from a mobile platform in Pattipulam, Chengalpattu district, marking the start of a new era in rapid space missions.
Rhumi 1 successfully deployed three Cube satellites into orbit and returned to Earth within seven minutes, setting a new standard for aerospace efficiency. Supported by Martin Group, the rocket was launched from the East Coast Road Beach on India’s first hydraulic mobile launch system, which offers adaptable operations from various angles.
Anand Megalingam, CEO of Space Zone India, praised the students who contributed to the project and acknowledged the unwavering support of Martin Group. Over the past two years, Space Zone India has undertaken numerous projects under Mission Rhumi.
The rocket carried three Cube satellites to study atmospheric conditions and deployed 50 Pico satellites to collect data on aspects such as cosmic radiation, UV intensity, air quality, ozone levels, and more.
The Martin Group, led by Santiago Martin, has expressed interest in investing in Space Zone India. Jose Charles Martin, Managing Director of Martin Group, emphasized their commitment to supporting cutting-edge technology and educational programs that inspire students in aerospace.
Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, hailed the successful launch as a testament to India’s growing capabilities in space innovation. Siva V. Meyyanathan, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Mylswamy Annadurai, known as the “moon man of India,” also lauded the mission’s success, highlighting its environmental benefits and inspirational value.
This historic launch signifies a leap forward for India’s space exploration efforts, setting the stage for future advancements and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers.
