Urgent Alert: Hawaii’s Big Island Braces for Devastating Impact of Tropical Storm Hone, Threatening Catastrophic Floods and Fires
Tropical Storm Hone, which means “sweet and soft” in Hawaiian, approached Hawaii on Saturday, bringing winds expected to intensify and elevate wildfire risks in dry regions of the state. With maximum winds of 65 mph (105 kph), Hone was anticipated to gain slightly in strength but remain below hurricane level, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
A tropical storm warning was issued for the Big Island, while a red flag fire warning was in place for the leeward sides of all islands through Saturday evening due to a combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, according to the National Weather Service.
The U.S. Drought Monitor reports most of Hawaii is already experiencing abnormal dryness or drought. The approaching storm evokes memories of last year’s catastrophic wildfires on Maui, fueled by hurricane-force winds, though meteorologist Derek Wroe noted Hone’s dangers are not as severe.
The devastating August 8, 2023, fire in Lahaina, driven by similar conditions, claimed 102 lives. Local residents like Calvin Endo of Makaha have taken personal action to clear dry brush from their properties to prevent future fires. “All you need is fire and wind and we’ll have another Lahaina,” Endo remarked, noting the increasing winds.
Authorities are prepared to shut off power if necessary to minimize fire risks from damaged lines. A small fire that began in Waikoloa on the Big Island Friday was swiftly contained without injuries or damage, Mayor Mitch Roth reported.
Preparations include closing certain beach parks due to high surf and readying shelters if needed. The Hawaii Tourism Authority urged travelers to defer outdoor activities but confirmed it’s safe to visit the islands.
Hone, located 185 miles southeast of Hilo, could deliver 5 to 10 inches of rain and winds of 20 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph. Additionally, Category 2 Hurricane Gilma, east of Hone, is expected to weaken but may bring rain to Hawaii mid-week.
