Embracing Human Values: Lessons from Ex-Vice Prez Venkaiah Naidu
Former Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu emphasized the importance of culture in addressing fundamental human concerns such as social harmony, environmental sustainability, dignity of labor, and inclusive growth during his address at the valedictory ceremony for the 27th Foundation Day of the Utkal University of Culture in Bhubaneswar on January 7. Naidu pointed out that Odisha holds a significant place in India’s civilizational narrative, with culture recognized as a dynamic force shaping collective life.
He remarked that Odisha’s culture, reflecting in its rituals, customs, architecture, literature, music, dance, and craftsmanship, deeply integrates into daily life. In this context, he noted it was fitting that India’s first university devoted solely to cultural studies was established in this state.
Encouraging students, Naidu urged them to value their rich cultural heritage while also embracing innovation. He insisted that education should empower them to question, create, and serve society.
Acknowledging today’s fast-paced, technology-driven era, Naidu stated that institutions like the Utkal University of Culture remind society that true progress must be rooted in identity, ethics, and shared memories. He cautioned that development lacking cultural grounding risks being hollow and disconnected from essential human values.
Naidu also emphasized the evolving nature of culture, asserting that the university’s responsibilities extend beyond mere conservation to the meaningful reinterpretation of traditions through research, documentation, and creative experimentation. He praised the university’s interdisciplinary approach, community engagement, and the role of teachers as mentors who balance academic excellence with ethical and creative sensitivity.
Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, also addressing the gathering, underscored the need to view culture as a catalyst for innovation, enterprise, and sustainable livelihoods in a rapidly changing world. He highlighted that both students and alumni of the university are not just guardians of cultural heritage but also potential cultural entrepreneurs and innovators.
“Culture is not merely something to be preserved; it is a living resource that can create jobs, enhance social cohesion, and contribute to sustainable development,” the Governor declared, reiterating the vital role of culture at the heart of societal progress.
