India Launches e-B-4 Visa: Simplifying Business Travel for Chinese Nationals
India has officially launched an e-Production Investment Business Visa, known as the e-B-4 Visa, specifically designed for Chinese businessmen to facilitate their travel to India for various business activities, including installation and commissioning of equipment. According to a recent advisory from the Indian Embassy, this visa became available from January 1 and can be applied for online, eliminating the need for embassy visits or intermediaries.
The introduction of the e-B-4 Visa aims to meet the increasing demand for business visas as Chinese nationals seek opportunities in India. Applicants can expect to receive their visa within approximately 45 to 50 days, with an allowance to stay in India for up to six months. The visa application is open for activities such as installation, quality checks, essential maintenance, production, IT integration, training, and supply chain development, among others.
Indian companies that wish to invite Chinese nationals for activities covered by the e-B-4 Visa can register on the DPIIT’s National Single Window System (NSWS) portal. The application process is straightforward, allowing applicants to submit their requests online along with the necessary supporting documents.
The launch of the e-B-4 Visa coincides with a renewed phase of diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing. In recent months, both countries have taken steps to enhance relations that had been strained. Notably, during discussions at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to pursue a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” approach to resolving border disputes.
Moreover, the two leaders recognized their economies’ vital role in stabilizing global trade amidst ongoing economic volatility, intensified by tariff issues with the United States. In a further sign of cooperation, Modi has invited Xi to the BRICS summit in 2026, which India will host, an invitation that Xi accepted while pledging Beijing’s support for India’s leadership in the BRICS format, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
