Exciting Leadership Shift: IIT Guwahati Professor Becomes Pro-VC at Tezpur University
The Ministry of Education has appointed Professor Amrendra Kumar Das from IIT Guwahati as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Tezpur University, effective immediately. This decision comes amid an administrative crisis and various allegations affecting the central university in Assam. According to an official announcement from the Department of Higher Education, Professor Das, who is part of the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati, will fulfill his role in accordance with the Tezpur University Act, Statutes, and Ordinances, having received necessary approval from the competent authority.
On the same day, the Ministry issued an Office Memorandum that formed a three-member Enquiry Committee under the provisions of the Tezpur University Act of 1993. This committee is tasked with investigating all matters related to the current situation at the university, specifically focusing on allegations involving the Vice-Chancellor. The committee will be chaired by Professor Lokendra Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University. Other members include Professor Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, the Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, and Professor Manish R. Joshi, Secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The memorandum instructs Tezpur University’s Vice-Chancellor to step down from all official duties and take immediate leave until the enquiry is concluded. The committee will conduct a thorough examination of the findings and recommendations from a previous Fact-Finding Committee report submitted to the Chancellor’s office. It will also assess the events that contributed to the ongoing crisis, such as resignations and the assumption of responsibilities by university officials.
The committee has the authority to visit the university campus, engage with stakeholders, review documents, and investigate any matters relevant to the enquiry. The Ministry of Education has requested the committee to submit its report as soon as possible, ideally within three months of the memorandum’s issuance. The UGC will provide secretarial assistance, while Tezpur University authorities are expected to offer full cooperation and support as needed.
This intervention by the Centre aims to restore administrative stability and resolve governance issues at Tezpur University.
