Tripura CM Manik Saha Declares Forced Religious Conversion a Crime

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha addressed the need for a social movement against forced religious conversion, labeling it a crime. Speaking to reporters at a Gurdwara in Chandmari, on the outskirts of Agartala, on December 25, he emphasized this message while commemorating Veer Bal Diwas. Saha reflected on the supreme sacrifice of the Sahibzade, the younger sons of Sikh Guru Gobind Singh, asserting that their martyrdom continues to inspire generations. In 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced December 26 as Veer Bal Diwas to honor the sacrifices of Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh.

The Chief Minister recounted the historical atrocities inflicted on the two sons, aged nine and six, which he described as an example of the extreme inhumanity of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. “The Sahibzade were killed solely because they refused to abandon their faith. Their sacrifice stands as a powerful symbol of courage and resistance against oppression,” Saha stated.

Highlighting the importance of Veer Bal Diwas, Saha advocated for raising awareness about forced religious conversion. He asserted, “Religion is a personal choice, and any conversion conducted through force or temptation is a crime,” while also mentioning the persecution faced by Kashmiri Pandits. Furthermore, Saha expressed concern over the diminishing Hindu population in Pakistan over the years, noting that the post-independence situation in East and West Pakistan has led to a significant decline in this demographic.

Calling for collective action, the Chief Minister urged that voices against forced religious conversion be raised not only within the country but also on international platforms.
