Exploring the historic alleys of Jew Town in Mattancherry, just a few kilometers from Fort Kochi, is an enchanting experience that captivates visitors time and again. This area seamlessly blends the old with the new, offering an array of artifacts, cozy cafes, and hidden historical gems that make you want to linger longer. The best way to uncover its treasures is by wandering through its streets at your own pace.

Among the must-see attractions is The Classic, a well-known antique store showcasing a magnificent six-foot-tall wooden ram, a striking centerpiece that has drawn the attention of many, including Prince Charles during his 2013 visit. This piece, believed to be the vehicle of Veera Bhadra Swamy, is just one of many intriguing items that reflect the rich history of the region. “The price depends on the object’s vintage nature, not size,” explains Suja Sunil, the shop attendant. In Jew Town, antique enthusiasts can find treasures priced between ₹2,500 and ₹25 lakh.

A short stroll takes you to the former home and embroidery shop of Sarah Cohen, a respected member of Kochi’s Jewish community who passed away in 2019. Now operated by Thaha Ibrahim, whom Sarah and her husband Jacob took under their wing as a child, this little museum preserves Sarah’s hand embroidery legacy. Visitors can explore embroidered linens, kippahs, and prayer books, along with poignant photographs that tell the story of a community’s history.

The Little Queen Embroidery shop, established over fifty years ago, continues this embroidery tradition, offering a rich selection of techniques such as cross stitch, herringbone, and the delicate petit point. Owner Thomas PE is dedicated to sharing the intricate techniques with visitors, while his team of women artisans keeps the cultural legacy alive through their crafts.

Dating back to the 18th century, Mandalay Hall stands as one of the last remaining Jewish homes in Kochi, constructed in the Dutch Burgher style. This building is particularly significant as it hosted the last Jewish wedding in Mattancherry in 1978. Today, it has been beautifully restored and operates as a luxury boutique art hotel, The Postcard Mandalay Hall, inviting guests to experience a piece of history.

Nearby, the AB Salem House, known as the home of the ‘Jewish Gandhi’, Abraham Barak Salem, has been transformed into a heritage guest house in 2023. This 350-year-old mansion provides visitors with a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of Kochi’s notable Jewish figures, immersing them in the area’s storied past.

As you wander further, the invigorating aroma of spices fills the air, enhancing the experience of exploring Jew Town. The local market, with its vibrant stalls offering black pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, and more, speaks to Mattancherry’s historic role in the spice trade that dates back centuries. This area was once home to the world’s first pepper exchange and continues to attract visitors interested in the rich cultural tapestry woven through spice commerce.

Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique travel experience, Jew Town offers a deep dive into the vibrant heritage of Kochi through its streets, shops, and stories.
