Guwahati: Political and Social Outcry Over Gang-Rape Incident
In Guwahati, political parties, student unions, and organizations, including the militant group Ulfa-I, have united in their condemnation of an alleged gang-rape incident, demanding severe punishment for those involved. Leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties expressed their outrage.
BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita decried the incident as indicative of broader societal issues, particularly targeting a specific community he claims is increasingly perpetrating such crimes against Assamese and Hindu women. Kalita stressed the need for heightened societal vigilance and expressed confidence that Assam Police would swiftly bring justice to the victim.
Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, took to social media to urge for a collaborative effort between police and the local community to ensure no effort is spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Congress state president Bhupen Kumar Borah echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the necessity for unwavering vigilance from the public and stringent actions from the police to prevent any escapes.
AIUDF chief Baruddin Ajmal described the incident as a societal disgrace, questioning the lack of exemplary punishments despite frequent occurrences of such crimes since the Lok Sabha elections. Ajmal, who had previously advocated for the death penalty in the Nirbhaya case, highlighted the need for severe penalties.
Ulfa-I, through a press statement, called on the state government to promptly identify and take action against all involved.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice among all sections of society, reflecting a unified stand against such heinous crimes and a demand for stringent and immediate legal action.
Recent related incidents include actress and former MP Mimi Chakraborty, who received online rape threats for supporting protests in Kolkata. Despite threats, she remains resolute in seeking justice.
The collective condemnation and determination to ensure justice underscore a significant societal and political consensus to address and curb the rising violence against women.
