Outrage in Mymensingh: Ten Arrested in Shocking Mob Lynching Case
Ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of 25-year-old Hindu man Dipu Chandra Das in Bhaluka, Mymensingh. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained seven suspects, while police apprehended three others. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s Interim Government, confirmed the arrests on social media, stating all ten were taken into custody related to the case.
Among those arrested by RAB are Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38), and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). Police arrested Md. Azmol Hasan Sagir (26), Md. Shahin Mia (19), and Md. Nazmul after conducting operations across several locations.
Dipu Chandra Das was reportedly beaten to death by a mob following allegations of blasphemy, and his body was set ablaze, triggering widespread outrage throughout Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council condemned the killing, describing it as a serious attack on communal harmony. The incident occurred on December 18 at approximately 9:00 PM when a group of attackers targeted Das, a garment worker.
This lynching took place amid national unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi. Hadi, the convenor of the student group Inqilab Moncho and a prospective candidate for the upcoming February 2026 elections, died on December 18 in Singapore while receiving treatment for gunshot wounds sustained during an earlier attack in Dhaka.
Hadi had been shot on December 12 while riding in a rickshaw in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. Police reported that two assailants on a motorcycle opened fire before escaping. His funeral, held on Saturday, attracted a large gathering, and he was laid to rest beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, in accordance with his family’s wishes.
