Urgent Call: Flood Forum Raises Alarm on Severe Erosion in West Saikhowa
The Dibrugarh-Tinsukia District Flood and Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum has raised serious concerns regarding the lack of preventive measures against riverbank erosion along an approximately 800-meter stretch near the Canopus Eco Tourist Camp in the Hatighuli area of West Saikhowa, Tinsukia district. During a field visit led by Forum president Binod Kedia, team members noted that while embankment work using sand-filled geo-bags is advancing rapidly in the erosion-prone areas of Milonpur, Felai, and Naokata, no action has been taken by the Water Resources Department to combat the alarming erosion occurring near the tourist camp.
The Forum highlighted that significant erosion during last monsoon had resulted in a large depression, resembling a pond, in the vicinity. Experts warn that as the next monsoon approaches, water inflow into this depression could worsen the situation, posing a serious threat to surrounding areas. Prior embankment work had been carried out over a stretch of about 1,200 meters, but most geo-bags were washed away during the last flood. The locals are increasingly worried about the lack of initiatives from the Water Resources Department to address these urgent repair needs.
Residents indicate that unless repair work is initiated along a roughly 1,100-meter stretch near the camp and erosion-control measures-such as geo-bags or geo-tubes-are implemented along an 800-meter stretch during the dry season, any erosion-control efforts in the downstream Felai-Naokata area will likely be ineffective, regardless of the number of geo-bags used. In response to these pressing concerns, the Forum and local residents have collectively appealed to the Water Resources Department to immediately commence erosion prevention work near the tourist camp.
