Assam Cabinet Greenlights Namrup Fertiliser Expansion for Economic Growth
The Assam cabinet has approved the transfer of government land to Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL) for the Namrup-IV Ammonia-Urea Brownfield Project, a critical step towards enhancing the state’s fertilizer production capacity. This announcement followed a cabinet meeting on December 18, which also addressed various measures focused on improving infrastructure, security, and social welfare across Assam.
The Namrup facility, managed by BVFCL, plays a vital role in the region’s agricultural economy. By facilitating this land transfer, the project will allow the corporation to enhance its operations through upgrades to existing infrastructure rather than constructing new facilities from the ground up.
In another significant development, the cabinet appointed Simu Das, a member of the Indian women’s blind cricket team that clinched the Women’s T20 Blind Cricket World Cup in 2025, as a physical instructor under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare. This recognition highlights her achievements and aligns with the provisions of Assam’s Integrated Sports Policy.
The government is also focusing on the welfare of indigenous communities, having approved the allotment of khas and ceiling surplus land to 308 indigenous families as part of Mission Basundhara. This program aims to provide homestead rights to landless families.
Security infrastructure was another focal point, with the cabinet sanctioning the transfer of 607 bighas of land in Dhemaji to the Central Reserve Police Force for establishing a group centre, a move expected to bolster the region’s security framework.
On the environmental front, the cabinet took steps to protect ecologically sensitive wetlands by approving the designation of Kumri Beel Area, covering 270 hectares, and Dhamar Beel Area, spanning 337 hectares in Goalpara, as proposed reserve forests. This initiative aims to safeguard these areas from encroachment and degradation, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental conservation.
