Toi’s book “Grains of Thoughts” highlights a critical issue facing the youth of Meghalaya. The wisdom of this statement resonates with the reality that many talented young people in the state are struggling to realize their potential due to a lack of supportive policies from leadership.
Meghalaya is rich in talent. Young athletes, musicians, academics, and aspiring entrepreneurs have proven their skills repeatedly, even amid limited resources. Yet talent alone is insufficient; it needs a supportive structure-policies, investments, and political will to flourish. Unfortunately, Meghalaya has long been hindered by a lack of comprehensive policies that genuinely promote youth development.
One glaring issue is the absence of a cohesive youth and talent policy. While various initiatives are announced, they are often poorly executed and lack a long-term vision. There’s no effective strategy to identify and nurture talent early, provide mentorship, or create pathways from education to employment. Existing skill development programs often exist only on paper, disconnected from the needs of the local economy.
The education system reflects this neglect. Schools and colleges suffer from inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of trained teachers, and outdated curricula. Rural areas are especially disadvantaged, forcing talented students either to migrate or abandon their dreams altogether.
Additionally, the potential in sports and the arts remains largely untapped. Meghalaya produces gifted athletes and artists but lacks the necessary facilities and support systems that could make these talents shine. Recognition often comes only after individuals succeed elsewhere, prompting the question: why must talent leave Meghalaya to be valued?
Perhaps the most damaging consequence of inadequate support is the out-migration of skilled youth. Professionals-doctors, engineers, teachers, and entrepreneurs-leave in search of better opportunities. This brain drain is not a natural occurrence but a direct result of policy inaction and a failure to create growth platforms within the state.
Those in power have a significant influence on the future of the youth and the state itself. Yet, when short-term political gains take precedence over long-term developmental goals, talent becomes collateral damage. Limited budgetary allocations for youth programs send a clear message: potential is not prioritized.
‘Driving the nail’ requires intention and strategic planning. For Meghalaya, this means developing a clear youth growth vision, backed by solid funding and accountability. There is a pressing need for investment in education reform, better sports infrastructure, and initiatives that harness local talent. Transparent systems that reward genuine merit and innovation are crucial.
Political courage is essential to view talent as the state’s greatest asset. The future of Meghalaya lies not just in its natural resources but in its young minds. A neglected talent pool eventually rusts away into frustration and lost opportunities. The state cannot afford this waste any longer. If those in power choose to be the driving force, Meghalaya’s talent will not only thrive but also underpin the very fabric of the state’s development.
Current government initiatives for youth empowerment involve substantial funding, but the success of these schemes depends on effective implementation and equitable access. Whether these projects will translate into real opportunities remains to be seen. However, the potential for change is a beacon of hope for Meghalaya’s youth.
