Baijayant Panda Appointed Assam Election Head for 2026: What to Expect?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced on Monday the appointment of Senior leader and National Vice President Baijayant Panda as the election in-charge for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. Additionally, Sunil Kumar Sharma, MLA and Leader of the Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, along with Darshana Ben Jardosh, a former Union Minister, have been designated as co-in-charges for the elections.
According to an official statement from BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, these appointments were made by the party’s National President JP Nadda and have taken immediate effect. The aim is to bolster the party’s organizational structure in Assam in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Party insiders indicated that this move underscores the BJP leadership’s commitment to early planning, grassroots mobilization, and enhanced coordination between central and state units to maintain power in the state.
Reacting to the news, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his support for the new appointments on social media. He stated, “…We are confident that under Panda ji’s guidance, the NDA will secure a historic third consecutive mandate to serve the people of Assam.” He also welcomed both Jardosh and Sharma in their roles.
Assam has been crucial for the BJP’s political advancement in the Northeast over the last decade, as the party has successfully formed the government for two consecutive terms. With the 2026 Assembly elections approaching, the BJP is expected to emphasize its governance achievements, development programs, and welfare initiatives while countering opposition narratives.
The election in-charge team will collaborate closely with the Assam BJP leadership, including the state president, organizational general secretary, and other office-bearers, to manage campaign strategy, candidate selection, and overall election coordination. Political analysts view these early appointments as a sign that the BJP is meticulously preparing for the 2026 Assembly elections, ensuring a streamlined organizational structure is in place.
